Thailand

Trips to Thailand
Now when Australians fly to Europe, they prefer to fly in the long-range jets (A380, 777ER, 787 etc) to Dubai or other Middle-Eastern countries on their way.  Previously they flew (and still can) by the Asian capitals - Bangkok, Singapore, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur etc.

1.  1985 - I had a 2-night stop over in Bangkok on my way to Japan, the Trans-Siberian-Railway and Europe.
2. 1999  - we stopped over in Bangkok for 2 nights at the start of our first around-the-world trip.
3. 2006 - I transited Bangkok airport on the way to and from China.
4. 2007 - my 4-week Indochina (Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia) trip began and finished in Bangkok.
5. 2008 - my 5-week Bangkok to Bali trip began in Bangkok.

Bangkok

I left Bangkok on the overnight train to Chiang Mai in northern Thailand.

It is a 306 step climb from the car park to the Wat Phrathat Doi SuthepTemple at Chiang Mai in northern Thailand.

The White Temple near Chiang Rai on the drive from Chiang Mai to Chiang Khong is a stunning sight.

Bangkok - The Independence Monument
It was commissioned in 1939 to commemorate the 1932 Siamese coup d'état which led to the establishment of a constitutional monarchy
in what was then the Kingdom of Siam, by its military ruler, Field Marshal Plaek Pibulsonggram.

The centrepiece of the Monument is a carved representation of the Thai Constitution of 1932,
on top of two golden offering bowls above a round turret.
The Constitution is symbolically guarded by four wing-like structures, representing the four branches
of the Thai armed forces - army, navy, air force and police - which carried out the 1932 coup.

The temple is on the top of a limestone karst.

And so across the border into Malaysia.  Through Malaysia to Singapore.  Then a flight to Jakarta.
Through Java and finally a ferry to Bali.
