United Kingdom - 1999

In June-July-August-September-October 1999 we went on our first around the world trip.
(99-days - Melbourne - Bangkok - Frankfurt - Moscow - St. Petersburg - Stockholm  - Helsinki - Copenhagen - Malaga - London -
Western Europe - UK - Egypt - Jordan - Israel - Greece - New York - Las Vegas - Melbourne.)

We flew from Malaga in Spain via Frankfurt to London.

Cleopatra's Needle on the Thames Embankment.
The ship that was originally bringing it to London sank in the Bay of Biscay.   Years later it was retrieved.
There are shrapnel marks on it from the first of the World War 1 German bombs which exploded near here.

The White Tower at the Tower of London which William the Conqueror began to construct in 1078.

The Tower Bridge. There was a fine audiovisual tour here where they took us up through various rooms where they explained
the planning, history, construction and the way the roadway was raised by hydraulics. We also walked across the top walkway.

Saint Margaret at St. Margarets!

Big Ben.

A London taxi ride.

Outside The Red Lion with Lois & Ian Fromholtz. A typical English pub. We had bangers & mash.

A London squirrel in Hyde Park.

Hampton Court Palace
Building of the palace began in 1515 for Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, a favourite of King Henry VIII.
In 1529, as Wolsey fell from favour, the cardinal gave the palace to the King to check his disgrace and Henry VIII later enlarged it.
Along with St James' Palace, it is one of only two surviving palaces out of the many the King owned.
It is 20km south-west and upstream of central London on the River Thames.

In the kitchens at Hampton Court Palace. This was an area where food was kept warm after it was cooked.

The gardens of Hampton Court Palace. Were they Gaudi's inspiration in Barcelona? A chestnut tree in bloom at the top right.

More of the formal gardens of Hampton Court Palace. Traditional English box hedges bordering the flower beds.

An old clock at Hampton Court Palace. It was a 24 hour clock with the seasons and the phases of the moon on it.

About to enter the 300 year old maze at Hampton Court Palace. It was hard to get out of.

Brighton
Brighton is a seaside resort on the south coast of England, 75km south of London.
A little bit of fun on Brighton Pier.

Going for a ride with John Marraner in his Ford Escort sports car at Brighton.
Linda, his wife,  is a sister of our friend Ian Fromholtz's brother-in-law.

We left the White Cliffs of Dover behind, on our way to mainland Europe at the start of our 24-day tour of Western Europe.
Our ferry was the Kent. A smooth one and a half hour crossing.
Then quickly off the ferry onto the freeways through Northern France, Belgium and Holland to Amsterdam. A four-country day.
