While we were in
Ireland on our 48-day Melbourne – Dubai
– Dublin – Ireland – Amsterdam
–
Rhine-Main-Danube River cruise – Istanbul – Dubai -
Melbourne trip we
crossed the border
to Northern Ireland (part of the United
Kingdom) for a quick look at Londonderry.
The original
name of the city, Derry,
is still used by the Irish
people south of the border.
Derry is the second largest city in Northern Ireland (after Belfast).
The Guild Hall - beautiful inside and out.
The Peace Bridge, for
pedestrians, links the Catholic and
Protestant sides of the River Foyle.
We had a walking tour along part of the old wall of the city.
Our local guide gave us a good talk about the civil rights disturbances
that have occurred in the city in the past.
Our 9-day Ireland tour returned to Dublin and then
we flew to Amsterdam for the start of our Rhine-Danube River cruise.
