Spain - 1985

Taking long service leave for the middle school term in 1985 I went on my first trip to Europe.
 (A 13-week Melbourne - Bangkok - Hong Kong -Taipei - Japan - Trans Siberian Railway - UK - Athens -
Israel - Egypt - Western Europe - Singapore - Melbourne trip.)

My tour crossed from the French Riviera into Spain.

Barcelona

The highlight of Barcelona - The Church of the Holy Family (The Sagrada Familia).
Construction of architect Gaudi's principal work was started in 1882.
Completion is still a long way off.
We took the lift to the top of one of the towers.

Madrid is the only major European city that is not situated on a river. Nor does it have a cathedral.

The Royal Palace in Madrid.

Toledo
Toledo is an historic Mediaeval walled city near Madrid.
El Greco painted a lot of his works here.
Toledo was once the capital of Spain, but since 1561 Madrid has been the capital.

A bull road sign advertising a brand of alcohol.
There were a number of them along the roadside in prominent positions.

Burgos

San Sebastian
We stayed here overnight.

I had a swim in the Atlantic Ocean.

We crossed the border back into France and travelled on to Bordeaux.
