On our week-long Duoro River cruise on the Queen Isabel in
Portugal
we had
a day-trip to Salamanca in Spain
Salamanca
is one of the most important university cities in Spain.
The Plaza Mayor (Main Plaza) is located in the centre of
Salamanca. It was built in the traditional Spanish baroque
style
and is a popular gathering area.
The market is next to the square.
The University
of
Salamanca, which was founded in 1218, is
the oldest university in Spain and the fourth oldest western
university.
With its 30,000 students, the university is, together with tourism, a
primary source of income in Salamanca.
It is in the centre of the city and integrated into its shopping and
tourist areas.
872 days to the 800th
anniversary of the founding of the
university
Salamanca has two
cathedrals, the Old Cathedral, of the
12th century and of Romanesque style, and the New Cathedral,
much larger, built in the 16th century of Gothic style and completed in
the 18th century.
They adjoin each other and are interconnected.
