Aspendos  -  2002

Aspendos has the best preserved amphitheatre in Turkey.
Dating from the 2nd century AD, it seats 20,000 people and it is well used today. A week after our visit a Russian Bolshoi ballet performance was to be held. The amphitheatre's architect married the Aspendos king's daughter as a prize for its construction.

The remains of a Roman aquaduct near Aspendos.
This 1 km long series of arches which brought water to the city from the mountains at the north is one of the rare examples surviving antiquity.
The water was brought from it's source in a channel formed by hollowed stone blocks on top of 15 metre-high arches.
