Troy - 2002

According to Homer, Paris abducted the beautiful Helen from her father, Menelaus, king of Sparta, and whisked her off to Troy, thus precipitating the Trojan wars.
Some legends say that she was won in the world's first beauty contest.
Trojan wars took place about 1200BC.

As mud bricks collapse over time, the Trojans continued to build on top. So there are varying ages; up to 9 different ones.
The first pottery wheels were used here.
Over the years soil has been washed down from and the sea is much further away from Troy now.

A small amphitheatre.

After passing Hellespont, the entrance to The Dardanelles, we drove down the Turkish Agean coast
past the Greek Island of Lesbos (called Parakila by the Turks).

We passed the site of the Normandy gold mine.
