About 200km from Puerto Varas, Valdiva is a large city which was severely damaged by the Great Chilean earthquake in 1960.
 At magnitude 9.5 i
t was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Chile.
The city is named after its founder Pedro de Valdivia once the southernmost outlier of the Spanish Empire.
In the second half of the 19th century, Valdivia was the port of entry for German immigrants who settled in the city and surrounding areas.
