About 200km from Puerto Varas, Valdiva is a large city
which
was severely damaged by the Great Chilean earthquake in 1960.
At
magnitude 9.5 it was the most
powerful earthquake ever recorded in Chile.
The city is named after its founder Pedro de Valdivia once the
southernmost outlier of the Spanish Empire.
In the second half of the 19th century, Valdivia was the port of entry
for German immigrants who settled in the city and surrounding areas.
