Arequipa - Peru
In April-May
2004 we had our third
around-the-world trip.
In 54 days we travelled to Auckland, Tahiti, Easter Island,
Santiago,
Lima, Arequipa, Colca Canyon, Sillustani, Lake Titicaca, Puno, Cusco,
Sacsayhuman, Tambomachay, Machu Picchu, Aguas Calientes,
Sacred Valley,
Ollantaytambo, Posada
Amazonas, Ica, Nazca, Paracas, Ballestas Islands,
Buenos Aires, Iguazu Falls, Itaipu Dam,
Rio de Janeiro, London, St.
Petersburg and Singapore.
We had a 6am, 1½ hour flight from Lima to Arequipa,
the 2nd largest city in Peru.
At 2335 metres in the Andes, Arequipa has had much earthquake damage
over the years.
The city was founded in 1540 and its historical center has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
These buildings line the Plaza de Armas.
The
Plaza de Armas is very well laid out with a garden setting.
The Catedral, on the side of the Plaza de Armas.
The original building, dating from 1656, was destroyed by fire in 1844,
and the second was toppled by earthquake in 1868.
The
inside is impressive, luminous, spacious and airy.
Across the other side of the plaza is Iglesia de La
Campaña, a Jesuit church with a very ornate
façade.
It has been so solidly built that it has survived earthquakes.
The
murals inside incorporate Inca motifs and ideas.
With our guide, Ana Mar in the former courtyard of a church, now a shopping arcade.
Many of the buildings are made of a light-coloured volcanic rock called sillar, hence Arequipa's nickname - the white city.
Monasterio de Santa Catalina
Occupying a whole city block, it is Peru's most important and impressive religious construction.
Built in 1580 and enlarged in the 17th century, it is surrounded by imposing high walls - a city within a city.
In 1970 it was opened to the public.
Resident nuns now live in a corner of the complex.
Arequipa's beauty is enhanced by the surrounding stunning mountains including the volcano, El Misti.
Out of Arequipa on the way to the Colca Canyon
On our flight out of Arequipa to Juliaca, the pilot flew over the top of El Misti volcano. We had a great view.
