The golden age of glaciers began in 1840, when Swiss scientist Jean Louis Agassiz published his two-volume Etudes sur les glaciers.
Agassiz (1808-1873) was the first to publicly declare that the earth had experienced an ice age.
He was a charismatic speaker and his public lectures brought glaciers to life.
