El Chaltén - Patagonia - Argentina

In January-February 2005 we visited South America before and after our Antarctic Cruise.

49-days - Melbourne - Auckland - Buenos Aires (Argentina) - Ushuaia - 10-day Antarctic Cruise - Ushuaia - El Calafate -
Perito Moreno Glacier - El Calafate - El Chalten - Puerto Natales (Chile) - Torres del Paine NP - Chilean Fiords ferry - Puerto Varas -
Lakes crossing - Bariloche (Argentina) - Buenos Aires - Auckland - Melbourne

From El Calafate we went on a 5 hour bus trip to El Chalten in Parque Nacional Los Glaciares.
On the way we stopped at a roadhouse where Juanita, a guanaco, greeted us.

El Chaltén is a small mountain village within the Los Glaciares National Park in The Andes in Patagonia.
It is a popular base for hiking numerous trails, such as those to the base of surrounding peaks and glacial lakes.

Mount Fitzroy, known by the natives as El Chalten

Another look at Juanita on the way back to El Calafate.

After a night in El Calafate we caught a bus to the Chile border and on to Puerto Natales.
