Bariloche - Argentina - 2005

In January-February 2005 we visited South America before and after our Antarctic Cruise.

49-days - Melbourne - Auckland - Buenos Aires (Argentina) - Ushuaia - 10-day Antarctic Cruise - Ushuaia - El Calafate -
Perito Moreno Glacier - El Calafate - El Chalten - Puerto Natales (Chile) - Torres del Paine NP - Chilean Fiords ferry - Puerto Varas -
Lakes crossing - Bariloche (Argentina) - Buenos Aires - Auckland - Melbourne

We reached Bariloche after the stunningly scenic 2-day, 3 lakes, 5 bus trip through The Andes
 from Puerto Varas in Chile.

San Carlos de Bariloche
The name Bariloche comes from the native word, Vuriloche, which means people behind the mountains.
San Carlos was the first European explorer who came to the area.

This is the police station in Bariloche.

Besides having lakes and scenery like Switzerland, many of the buildings in Bariloche have been designed with an old European flavour.
The area was settled with a lot of Swiss and German immigrants, some escaping the Crimea Wars and World War 1.
They brought with them their family chocolate making skills and now Bariloche is world renowned for its quality chocolates.

Bariloche is on the shores of Lago Nahuel Huapi.
Breakfast at our hotel.

On the outskirts of Bariloche. The local amateur radio repeater frequencies.
We have the 2-metre band (the 147 Mhz frequencies) in Australia too.
However it is a long time since we have had the 224Mhz frequencies in Australia.

A maximum and a mininum speed to keep sight-seers moving.

After a night in Bariloche we picked up our hire car, a chevrolet, and drove to San Martín de Los Andes,
a pretty town and skiing area.

After saying overnight in San Martín we drove back to Bariloche and along Andean valleys to El Bolson.

Mt. Tronador
(3478m), which has the black glacier further down its slope.
This view is from the Argentinian side. We had previously seen it from the Chilean side.

Bariloche is on the edge of The Andes and is surrounded by a number of ski fields.
There are great views of the lakes surrounding Bariloche from the top. Bariloche is Argentina's "Switzerland".

After a week in the Bariloche area we had a 2¼-hour flight to Buenos Aires.
We spent 3 nights in Buenos Aires.

And so farewell to Buenos Aires, Argentina and South America. Our second trip to South America.
A fantastic 7 weeks.

We  had a 13¼-hour flight to Auckland with Aerolineas Argentinas, a 3¼-hour wait at the airport
and then a 4-hour Air New Zealand flight to Melbourne.
