Rio de Janeiro - 2004
Ipanema

In April-May 2004 we had our third around-the-world trip. In 54 days we travelled to Auckland, Tahiti, Easter Island,
Santiago, Lima, Arequipa, Colca Canyon, Sillustani, Lake Titicaca, Puno, Cusco, Sacsayhuman, Tambomachay, Machu Picchu, Aguas Calientes,
Sacred Valley, Ollantaytambo,
Posada Amazonas, Ica, Nazca, Paracas, Ballestas Islands, Buenos Aires, Iguazu Falls, Itaipu Dam,
Rio de Janeiro,
London, St. Petersburg and Singapore.

After 4 wonderful days at Iguazú Falls we flew to Rio de Janeiro.
From Foz do Iguaçu we had a 1½ hour flight to São Paulo, a ¾ hour wait on the ground and then a ¾ hour flight to Rio de Janeiro.
We stayed at a hotel overlooking the beach in Ipanema.

A great breakfast at the Sol Ipanema Hotel, as they all were in South America.

Swimming in the South Atlantic Ocean. The water temperature was pleasant.

They floodlight the beach at night.

The distinctive paving on the promenade beside the Ipanema Beach.

On Sundays they close the lanes of the road nearest the beach with one way traffic in the other lanes.

The rescue helicopter put on a display outside our hotel window.

The beach in front of our hotel.

The tree lined, South Yarra-look alike streets behind the beachfront in Ipanema.

Now known as Garota de Ipanema (Girl from Ipanema), the cafe where Tom Jobim & Vinícius de Moraes wrote the famous song in 1962.

It turns out there actually was a "girl from Ipanema," Heloisa Eneida Pinto,
and she used to stroll "like a samba" past the bar every so often on her way to Ipanema Beach,
and her "tall and tan/and young and lovely" looks inspired the song writers.
