Mekong River - Laos - 2007
I had a 4-week
Indochina trip in May-June 2007.
(Melbourne – Bangkok – Thailand – Laos -
Vietnam - Cambodia -Thailand – Bangkok - Melbourne)
After 6 nights in Thailand on my IntrepidTravel tour we
crossed the Mekong River from Chiang Khong in Thailand into Laos.
Looking
at Laos across the Mekong River from our Guest House in Chiang Khong.
Leaving Chiang Khong in Siam
(Thailand) to cross the Mekong River to Bokeo in Laos.
My first time in Indochina (Laos,
Vietnam and Cambodia - the former French
colonies in Asia).
The opposite side of the gate
Our longboat (Hea doy san).
A very comfortable 2 day cruise down the Mekong
River from Houei Sai to Luang Prabang.
The owner's family lived on the back of the boat.
Our Mekong guide, Chan
Larm, the wife of the owner of the boat, Touy.
Chan, our local guide, wrote Lao descriptions for the photos in my brag
book.
Unfortunately Larm was illiterate and could not
read them.
She sat near the back of the
boat in a quiet manner for the whole cruise.
Ban Hoey Dralang
Village
We
went ashore to visit this village.
As
in the rest of Laos there were lots of young children.
This
20 year old mother of 2 was pounding rice
The
stick was used to keep the chooks away
Making
tools
There
was an albino child in the village
Li, a 15 yo nephew of the owner, was on board our
boat.
I do not think that he had ever gone to school.
He was illiterate
As you can see the 33m long, 3m wide boat was very comfortable.
We did not sleep on the boat. We stayed
overnight at a guesthouse.
I had my laptop with me.
Arriving at Pak Beng
where we stayed overnight at a guesthouse.
