I had a 4-week
Indochina trip in May-June 2007.
(Melbourne – Bangkok – Thailand – Laos -
Vietnam - Cambodia -Thailand – Bangkok - Melbourne)
After our boat
cruise we left Hue by minibus to travel to Hoi An.
Instead of going through a newly open tunnel we opted to
travel the scenic route via Lang Co Beach
and along the winding roads over the Hai Van Pass.
We had a swim in the Gulf of Tonkin in the South China Sea at a beach
near Lang Co.
A nice spot. Very warm, clean water.
Very refreshing.
Hai Van Pass (Hai
Van means "Sea Clouds"), where there
are great views along the coast to the north and south. The pass forms an
obvious boundary between North and South Vietnam, and if proof were
needed,
you need look no further than the gateway and fortifications built by
the French
and then later used by the South Vietnamese and the Americans.
A stragetic place.
