Zipaquira Salt Cathedral

Salt has been mined at Zipaquira about 50km outside of Bogata for over 150 years.
Right from the beginning, miners took religious items down the mines - so there has been
a cathedral of sorts here for a long time.
In 1951 the mines were open to the public and a cathedral constructed in 1954.
It was closed in 1992 for safety regions.  A new cathedral was opened in 1995.
It is 60m below the original one.  It is 95m long and 18m high and can accommodate 8400 people.
The carved columns were impressive as well as the carved and lit crosses.

On the way into the cathedral we passed the 12 stations of the cross.
