Cameron Highlands

The Cameron Highlands in Malaysia were "discovered" by government surveyor, William Cameron, on a mapping expedition in 1885.
During the 1920s the area was developed as a hill station.
The cool weather attracted people to build homes and retreats on the plateau
and before long a small community was established.
The fertile soil attracted farmers.

Tea plantations were first established here in the 1920s and 90% of the tea grown here is consumed in Malaysia.
The tea bushes last well over 100 years and their leaves are picked every 3 weeks.
The young leaves make the best tea.

This is how a mature tea tree would look if it was allowed to grow to its full height.

At the factory the leaves that are picked early that morning are processed straight away.
First they are crushed, then fermented, dried and sorted.

There are lots of glasshouses in the area where strawberries are grown.
These days they are grown hydroponically in plastic tubs.
