In May 2013 we
went on a 33-day, "5-Stans",
Central Asia tour.
(Melbourne - Kuala Lumpur - Kazakhstan - Kyzgystan - Uzbekistan -
Tajikistan - Turkmenistan - Dubai - Melbourne)
There
were plenty of spare
seats on the Air Asia A330 jet
for the
8½ hour flight from Melbourne to Kuala Lumpur.
We stayed at a hotel near the airport.
The next morning we caught the airport-train into the city centre.
Our first stop was at the Kuala
Lumpur Orchid Gardens.
On to the adjacent Hibiscus Gardens.
Athough
it originated in China, and came to Malaysia with traders before the
12th
century,
the Hibiscus
(Rosa Senesis) is the national flower
of Malaysia.
It is found in abundance throughout Malaysia and is known locally as Bunga Raya.
They had a great display, in many different colours, in the gardens.
Kuala Lumpur Bird Park
Kuala Lumpur Bird Park is across the road from the Orchid Gardens.
Margaret loved having her photo taken with the birds.
Built in 1965, the National Mosque is just down the hill from the Bird
Park.
A very early breakfast at the airport hotel before our 8am flight to
Almaty in Kazakhstan.
From Kuala Lumpur we had an 8-hour Air Astana flight to Almaty in
Kazakhstan.
And so our Central Asia, 5-Stans, Silk Road tour began.
