Lombok - 2011

In June 2011 my 15-day IntrepidTravel tour of Sumatra finished back in Kuala lumpur in Malaysia.
From Kuala Lumpur I had a 4-hour flight to Bali.
I caught up with my new IntrepidTravel tour group at the guest house in Ubud
for my 8-day tour of the Indonesian island of Lombok.

The next day we left Bali on the 4-hour ferry trip to Lombok.

Jodine, from Canada, one of my 8 fellow Lombok travellers.

First sightings of Lombok.

Roughly 70km by 70km,  Lombok has a drier climate than neighbouring Bali.
About 3.2 million people live on the island.

We got caught up in a wedding procession.

Unlike Bali, where most people are Hindu, Lombok people are mainly Islamic.

Tetebatu

Lombok's topography is dominated by the centrally-located stratovolcano Mount Rinjani.
Its most recent eruption was in May 2010.

We had lovely 3-hour stroll through the rice paddies, crops and villages near our guest house.

Air Terjun Jukut Waterfall

It was a short walk to these falls after our walk through the rice paddies.

Pringgasela Village

We had a delicious lunch in
the village.

These girls were studing at a nearby college, and were keen to practise their English with us.

Tetebatu Village

This beautiful girl was climbing a tree at our guest house.

We were driven in horse drawn carts (cidomos) through the village.

Lombok Coast

The 3 main Gili Islands, just off the Lombok north-west coast.
Gili Trawangan Island, Gili Meno Island,  Gili Air Island.
We stayed on Gili Air, the island on the right.

Leaving the Lombok coast on the 20-minute boat trip to Gili Air Island.

The Gili Islands
The 3 Gili Islands (or just the Gilis) came to the attention of the wider world as a backpacker mecca in the 1980s and 1990s.
This is still true to a large extent.
In a rare display of foresight, all forms of motorized transport are banned from the islands.
The only choice is a horse-drawn cart called a cidomo.
There are lots of beachfront cafes, many with wi-fi.

Most accomodation is still rustic but we stayed at a pleasant resort on Gili Island.

The next day we had a boat trip to the other 2 Gili Islands.

There was a small turtle hatchery on Gili Meno Island.

Eggshells!!!

Unfortunately, not our boat.

We snorkelled near Gili Trawangan Island.

We had 2 days on the island and then went back to Lombok.

Senggigi

The very small entrance door of our room at Puri Bunga Beach Cottage in Senggigi.

It was only a 30-minute flight from Lombok back to Bali.

I spent a night at Sanur in Bali and then flew from Bali to Perth with Air Asia.
The end of a great 24 days mainly in Indonesia.
