Rhino and
Lion Nature Reserve
- Johannesburg
Ben and Crystal drove me to
this reserve, about 40 km north-west of Johannesburg.
We had a fantastic time here. Certainly one of the highlights
of my 8-week trip.
As well as being able to drive close to lions, cheetas, wild dogs,
buffalo, rhinos and other African animals,
we were able to nurse and play with lion cubs and black
leopard cubs.
We took over 300 photos and I had great difficulty in culling them.
In another area we were able to nurse and play with Black Leopard cubs.
These
cubs are also known as Black
Panthers.
A
black
panther
is a black colour variant of one of several species of larger
cats in various parts of the world,
and belong to the feline genus panthera which contains lions,
tigers, leopards and jaguars.
The name "panther"
is often limited to black individuals.
"Panther"
in North America is most commonly used for the cougar (Puma),
in Latin America it is most often
used to mean a jaguar and elsewhere in the world it usually
refers to the leopard.
The name "panther" may also refer to individuals
which are
normally-colored for the species (tawny or spotted),
and also to white
individuals.
What a great time we had with the cubs.
There were more animals at this great place.
Warthogs
A different sort of wildlife, some
of my
fellow passengers were at the park too.
