Eswatini is a land-locked country in Southern Africa.
In Oct- Nov-Dec
2009 I flew to Perth where I caught up with new-born Bryn for the first
time.
I flew to Johannesburg for the start of the first of my 2
DriftersTravel tours of Southern Africa.
The first tour went via Durban to Cape Town.
After leaving Kruger
NP in South Africa we drove through Swaziland
to Zululand back in South Africa.
Swaziland is a very small, independent country. They grow a
lot of sugar which is their main export.
Their soil looked rich but their roads were in poor condition.
The population of Eswatini is composed primarily of ethnic Swazis. The
language is Swazi.
The Swazis established their kingdom in the mid-18th century.
The present boundaries were drawn up in 1881 in the midst of
the Scramble for Africa.
After the Second Boer War, the kingdom, under the name of Swaziland,
was a British protectorate from 1903
until it regained its independence in 1968.
In April 2018, the official name was changed from Kingdom of Swaziland
to Kingdom of Eswatini,
mirroring the name commonly used in Swazi.
