Orange River - Namibia - 2009

In Oct-Nov-Dec 2009 I flew to Perth where I caught up with new-born Bryn for the first time.
I flew to Johannesburg for the start of the first of my 2 DriftersTravel tours of Southern Africa.
The first tour went via Durban to Cape Town.

On the second tour I tavelled from Cape Town through Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe back to Johannesburg.

After crossing the border from South Africa into Namibia we travelled a short distance
to the Felix Unite Campsite on the banks of the Orange River.

Felix Unite Campsite

A very pleasant spot to camp.

The Orange River forms the border between South Africa and Namibia.
As part of our Drifters tour we had a kayak expedition, 35 km down the river,  sleeping overnight on the bank.
We had 2-man kayaks - I shared mine with Ruben, a 27 year old German.
We packed our gear into tight-lidded drums that fitted neatly into the kayak.
After rain in the upper reaches of the river, water had been released from a dam, so there was a decent
current running and not a lot of paddling was needed.  Mostly we only had to use the paddles for steering.

We did not have to paddle back upstream.  A quaint old bus picked us up.

We travelled further into Namibia to the entrance to Fish River Canyon National Park.
