Bago - 2010

Bago, formerly Pegu, was reputedly founded in 573 by two Mon princes
who saw a female goose standing on the back of a male goose.
Taking this to be an auspicious omen of some kind they founded a royal capital called Hanthawady.
The city is about 90km from Yangon.

Shwemawdaw Paya

Shwemawdaw Paya (Great Golden God), 114m high,  is Bago's main attraction and dominates the skyline.
It was originally built in the 10th century but earthquakes have damaged it several times and it has been rebuilt.
