Bago, formerly Pegu, was reputedly founded in 573 by two
Mon princes
who saw a female goose standing on the back of a male goose.
Taking this to be an auspicious omen of some kind they founded a royal
capital called Hanthawady.
The city is about 90km from Yangon.

Buddhist monks chanting in prayer and busy with their studies.

Paya (Great
Golden God), 114m high, is Bago's main attraction and
dominates the skyline.
It was originally built in the 10th century but earthquakes have
damaged it several times and it has been rebuilt.
The old Hti (umbrella or top ornament) which
collapsed due to an earthquake in 1917.
On the outskirts of Bago, there is a massive 90m
long reclining Buddha.
