Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa).
One of the most venerable places for Buddhists in Sri Lanka, the temple was built in the 17th century.
According to legend, a tooth was recovered from the funeral pyre of the Lord Buddha and was eventually
smuggled to Sri Lanka by Princess Hemamili during the reign of King Kirthi Sri Meghavarna (301-328AD).

Safeguard of the relic was a responsibility of the monarch, therefore over the years the custodianship
of the relic became to symbolize the right to rule.
Reigning monarchs built the tooth relic temples quite close to their royal residences.

Kandy to Bandarawala

We had a pleasant train trip in the Sri Lankan Highlands.
Bruno, our tour-leader, got us the best seats on the train - in the rear observation carriage.

The original station building at Kandy.

We travelled through beautiful countryside.

We are now in the highlands and we see our first tea plantations.

The British planted lots of Australian eucalypts.  Many of them have been used for railway sleepers.

There was a clown
on the train!!!

The end of a very pleasant trip.

I may have one of these when my hair is fully grey!!!
