This pretty wooden mosque was built by Chinese artisans for the local Dungans between 1907 and 1910,
 entirely without metal nails.
Dungan is a term used in the former Russian republics to refer to Muslim people of Chinese origin.
In both China and the former Soviet republics where they reside,
however, members of this ethnic group call themselves Hui.
The mosque was closed by the Bolsheviks between 1933 and 1943, but has since again become a place of worship.
