Karakol - 2013
Karakol is the 4th largest city in Krgyzstan.
It is located on the eastern tip of Lake Issyk-Kul.

This pretty wooden mosque was built by Chinese artisans
for the local Dungans
between 1907 and 1910,
entirely without metal nails.
Dungan is a term used in the former Russian republics to refer to
Muslim people of Chinese origin.
In both China and the former Soviet republics
where they reside,
however, members of this ethnic group call
themselves Hui.
The mosque was closed by the Bolsheviks between 1933 and 1943, but has
since again become a place of worship.

Holy Trinity Cathedral, a Russian Orthodox church, was completed in
1895.
It was used as an officer's club during Soviet times, but is now
restored and in use again.
We had a brief look inside a Teachers College and had our photos taken
with some of the students.
