Nikolai
Mikhaylovich Przhevalsk (1839
- 1888), was a Russian geographer
and
a renowned explorer of Central and Eastern Asia.
Between 1870 and 1885 he led 4 major explorations.
He contributed
significantly to European knowledge of Central Asia and was the first
known European
to describe the only
extant species of wild horse which
is named after him.
Przhevalsky
died of typhus here at Karakol on the shore
of Lake
Issyk-Kul. He was about to start his
fifth
journey.
