Toktogul
Dam is a hydroelectric and irrigation dam on the Naryn River
in Kyrgyzstan.
The
reservoir was created in 1976 after construction works on the dam were
completed
and the Kementub
Valley was flooded.
The dam is named
after Toktogul
Satilganov, a famous Kyrgyz
poet and singer (1864-1933).
His
fame reached a high point in the Soviet era when his works were
promoted by the state
as a musician of the people and he was known
throughout Kyrgyzstan
simply as Toktogul.
The
Toktogul Hydroelectric Station has a capacity of
1,200 MW,
which makes it the largest power plant in the
country.
We ate a very late lunch at a roadside chaikhana (teahouse/cafe) just
outside the town ofJalai-Abad.
