Uzgen Minaret and Mausoleums - 2013

These structures were built during the Karakhanid era.
The Karakhanids occupied Uzgen during the 10th, 11th and 12th centuries.
They brought Islam to the region.

During this time, Uzgen was a thriving economic and cultural center.
The Karakhanid era ended when Ghengis Kahn's armies invaded the area.

Minarets were lighthouses.
Fires were lit atop minarets to help guide caravans and travellers at night.

This triple 12th century mausoleum is not unlike Huyaman's tomb in Delhi in India.
Each of the 3 mausoleums is different, and they are all built of different shades of red-brown clay bricks.
There were no glazed tiles in Central Asia at this time.
