Andijon - 2013

In May 2013 we went on a 33-day, "5-Stans", Central Asia tour.
(Melbourne - Kuala Lumpur - Kazakhstan - Kyrzgystan - Uzbekistan - Tajikistan - Turkmenistan - Dubai - Melbourne)>

We spent 5 days in Kazakhstan and a week in Kyrzgystan.
From Osk in Krygyzstan we crossed the border (5km away) into Uzbekistan to Andijon.

Andijon, the 4th largest city in Uzbekistan, is located in the Fergana Valley.
The Fergana Valley was poorly divided by the Russians between Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.
The valley region in each of these 3 countries contains a mixture of the 3 ethnic groups - Uzbeks, Kyrgyzs and Tajiks.
Poor treatment of ethnic minorities and closed border crossings has caused riots in Osh and Andijon in recent years.

Andjion was the home of Barbur, the founder of the Mughal dynasty.

Our first stop was at a bakery.

The bread was stuck to the top of the oven to cook.

We visited a nearby silk factory.

Meatball soup for dinner.

Beef strips cooked with onions and garlic.

A smaller apricot than ours, but beautifully sweet.
