Bukhara  -  2013

From Shakhrisabz we had a 5-hour drive to Bukhara
Bukhara is another city with a long history and was an important trading site on the Silk Road.
It is the home city of Rustam, our guide in Uzbekistan.
Bukhara is known to the locals as Buxoro, meaning "centre of beauty".
We passed some camels on our way.

We arrived at about 7pm and went straight to a family restaurant, Doston House, for dinner.
Again it was in their courtyard.
The house was formerly owned by a Jewish family.

Cooking pilaf, a rice dish, especially for us on an outside gas ring.

We had salads, samosas, pumpkin fritters, egg fritters, pilaf and soup.

Once this area was a warren of market lanes, arcades and bazaars.
There are 3 remaining domed bazaars left.
Originally they each specialised in different goods (jewellery, cap makers and money-changers)
but now they have been given over to tourist shops.

Uncovered remains of a 5th century Zoroastrian temple.
