One of the most awesome sights in Asia, The Registan, an ensemble of 3
vast medressas, is the centre-piece of Samarkand city.
Registan means "sandy place". It is built on the
old market-place site where the camel caravans
would have camped on their journeys along the Silk Road.
In the public square in front of the 3 medressas, people would have
gathered to hear
royal proclamations and witness public executions.
The Ulugh Beg Madrasah was one of the best
clergy universities of the Muslim Orient in the 15th Century.
The
Tilya-Kori
Madrasah was built between
1646 and 1660. Tilya-Kori
means "Gilded".
It was not only a residential college for
students, but also played the role of the grand mosque.
Sher - Dor means "Medrassa
with
lions".
However the architect had never seen lions.
He had seen tigers and believed that they were similar to lions ...
hence the tigers on the facade.
Chorsu Trading Dome.
We had a wonderful 2 days in Samarkand. There were many, many great historic sights.
It was right up there with Karnak in Egypt, Ankor Wat in Cambodia and Macchu Piccu in Peru
as one of the great places that I have seen.
