The
Cliffs of Moher reach
a height of 215 metres above the Atlantic Ocean.
Of all the sights that I saw on our tour of Ireland, this was
my
favourite.
The cliffs take their name from a ruined promontory fort, Mothar,
which was demolished during
the Napoleonic Wars to make room for a signal tower.
O'Brien's Tower marks the
highest point of the cliffs.
The
impressive, well-planned, Visitor Centre opened in 2007. It
has
been built
into a hillside approaching the cliffs.
The centre is also environmentally sensitive with
its use of renewable energy systems including
geothermal heating and
cooling, solar panels, and grey water recycling.
