The Iron Gates - 2014

The Iron Gates are a series of gorges on the River Danube. 
 In the broad sense it encompasses a route of 134 km.
The gorges lie between Romania in the north and Serbia in the south.

During the 1990s, a team of sculptors carved this 40-meter tall rock sculpture of Decebalus.
Decebalus (ruled 87-106AD) was the last king of Dacia (part of modern-day Romania).
He is famous for fighting three wars, with varying success, against the Roman Empire under two emperors.
Since the mid 19th century Decebalus has been portrayed as a national hero in Romania.












A Roman memorial plaque ("Tabula Traiana") commemorates the completion of Trajan's military road.

















We went through two masive locks, one after the other at one of the dams on the Danube River used for hydro-electricity generation.
