Viliko Tarnovo was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire (1185
-1422AD).
The
Second Bulgarian Empire was ruled from Tsarevets, a
medieval stronghold located on a hill overlooking Viliko
Tarnovo.
The fortress became the most important one in
Bulgaria,
often compared with Rome and Constantinople in magnificence.
In 1393, the stronghold was besieged by Ottoman forces for three months
before finally being conquered and burnt down,
which marked the fall of the Bulgarian Empire.
After returning to The River Duchess we then cruised overnight to Giurgin in Romania.
We disembarked after our 27-day river cruise and then we had a 1-hour bus trip to Bucharest.
After a night there and a good look around we flew to Istanbul in Turkey.
