In
July-August 2015 we had a fantastic 57-day European trip.
(Melbourne - Dubai - Paris - Norway -
Spitsbergen - Arctic cruises - Iceland -
River Seine cruise - Dubai - Melbourne)
We flew from Paris to Stavagner in southern Norway.
Doug, my friend who I met on my 2nd African trip in 2009, met us at the
airport.
He had driven 130km from his home further south to collect us.
Fortunately he was able to combine this trip with a visit to his
dentist.
He gave us a short tour of the historical area of the city.
Stavanger is one of Norway's
oldest cities.
It emerged in the 12th century during a period of
population growth and increasing urbanization throughout northern
Europe.
Stavanger's
core is to a large degree 18th- and 19th-century wooden houses that are
protected and considered part of the city's cultural heritage.
This has caused the town centre and inner city to retain a small-town
character with an unusually high ratio of detached houses,
and has contributed significantly to spreading the city's
population growth to outlying parts of Greater Stavanger.
Today Stavanger is the centre of the oil industry in
Norway and is often called the oil capital.
