Skeiðarársandur
is a sandur in southern Iceland.
A sandur (pl. Sandar) is a spreading plain formed by the alluvial
glacial sand, gravel carried along and deposited by melting
ice
caps.
In 1996 this area was very badly damaged when a volcanic explosion that
originated beneath the Vatnajökull glacier
caused torrents of meltwater and debris to wash away the plain.
The power of the water and giant icebergs swept away parts of the Ring
Road and bridges.
This was the only road that connects the eastern area to the rest of
the island.
Some of the wreckage of the original bridge is kept as a monument.
