The last execution in Iceland

1. Pristapar
The last execution in Iceland took place here in 1830.

Hanna Kent, as part of her Phd thesis, has written a novel, Burial Rites, about the saga.
In 2002, she spent time here a 17 year-old exchange student from Adelaide,
and when visiting this site she was told about how Agnes was the last person to executed in Iceland.

2. Tjörn

Tjörn, the site where Agnes Fridrik are now buries is about 50km away.

3. Illugastadir

Illugastadir is the farm where the murders took place in 1828.
The two unfortunate, young people who killed the two men, stole all valuables, and set the fire to hide their tracks,
were members of a larger group of enemies of the proprietor of the farm.
After the misdeed, they were caught and sentenced to death and beheaded in the so-called Three Mound Area of Pristapar
in 1830.
This turned out to be the last execution carried out in Iceland.

Capital punishment was abolished after that.   The axe, and the block are preserved in the National Museum of Iceland.
