Fish River Canyon

One of Namibia's great natural sights, it is claimed to be the second largest in the world.
(They made the same claim about the Colca Canyon in Peru too.)

The Fish River Canyon probably formed about 500 million years ago. However, the gorge was not only created
by water erosion, but also through the collapse of the valley bottom due to movements in the earth's crust.

With a depth of up to 550 metres, the enormous gorge meanders along a distance of 165 kilometres
and is up to 27 km wide,

Only overnight hikers are allowed down into the canyon.

I visited the canyon during my 47-day, 5-country trip in southern Africa in 2009.

We walked about 3 km along the rim between view points.

There were ground squirrels on top of the rim.
