The Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is the best natural sight that I have seen  ... number 1 of a lot of great world sights that I have been to.

In August 1984 we flew to Brisbane and then to Proserpine where we caught a bus to Shute Harbour
and then a ferry to South Molle Island.  We had a fantastic week-long holiday at the resort on the island.

They had high-speed catamaran trips to the outer reef but opted to fly out there in a float plane.

It was magic standing on the reef a long way from anywhere.

We were given these glass-bottomed cylinders to get a better view of the reef.

A view of a very small part of the reef from the plane.

The Great Barrier Reef, the world's largest coral reef system, is composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands,.
It stretches for over 2,300 km in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland.

The Great Barrier Reef can be seen from outer space and is the world's biggest single structure made by living organisms.

This reef structure is composed of and built by billions of tiny organisms, known as coral polyps

When you put your head under water it is like being in a giant aquarium.

In 1996 we flew to Cairns for a 2-week holiday.  We went on a fast catamaran trip to the outer reef.
