On
my IntrepidTravel trip to Africa in 2008
we came to this area of South Western Uganda
to see the mountain gorillas in Mgahinga
National Park.
After walking steadily up a mountain
for 2 hours,
our local guides
found a family group of 8 in
a bamboo forest.
There were 3 silverbacks, 2 other males, 2 females and a baby (whose
sex had not yet been determined).
There
are two
groups of mountain gorillas. One is found in the Virunga volcanic
mountains of Central Africa, within 4 national
parks: Mgahinga N P, in south-west Uganda; Volcanoes
N P, in north-west Rwanda; and
Virunga N P and Kahuzi-Biéga N P, in the
eastern Democratic Republic of
Congo (DRC).
In Uganda and
Rwanda, only 8 people allowed to visit the habitat each
day. It was difficult to
take clear photos of them. We were close enough
for one of them to reach out and touch Lesley, one
of our group of 8.
