Depite the magnificent waterfalls, geysers and volcanoes, this was my
favourite site on our Iceland tour in August 2015.
An amazing, fantastic sight.
Columnar bassalt is formed when magma cools slowly and cracks into
columns, usually hexagonal, as surface area dedreases.
The columns always stand perpendicular to the cooling surface and can
be horizontal, spreading out from the centre, or vertical.
The varied forms of columns here are perhaps due to this being a
cross-section of an ancient volcano.
A fantastic site. The black-pebbled beach and the
surf were
great sights too.
The whole scene blew me away!!!
