Chilean Fiords cruise - February 2005

In January-February 2005 we visited South America before and after our Antarctic Cruise.

49-days - Melbourne - Auckland - Buenos Aires (Argentina) - Ushuaia - 10-day Antarctic Cruise - Ushuaia - El Calafate -
Perito Moreno Glacier - El Calafate - El Chalten - Puerto Natales (Chile) - Torres del Paine NP - Chilean Fiords ferry - Puerto Varas -
Lakes crossing - Bariloche (Argentina) - Buenos Aires - Auckland - Melbourne

There is no road north from Puerto Natales to Puerto Montt.
Tourists take the 4 night Navimag cruise through the fiords past many of Chile's 6000 islands.
We cruised on the coastal ferry, the Puerto Eden.
(We were to cruise on a more modern ferry, but it had been damaged by running aground a few weeks earlier.)

Wellington Island
is Chile's third largest Island.
We were taken off the ferry in the small boats of the islanders to visit Puerto Eden, the main settlement on the island.

Angostura Inglesa
(English Narrows) and the Stella Maris statue.
Stella Maris Virgen is credited with protecting sailors and her statue was acknowledged with four long blasts on the ship´s hooter.

Yelcho Glacier

After 4 nights on the ferry we arrived in Puerto Montt where we disembarked.
We collected our hire car, a Toyota Yaris, and drove to Puerto Varas, a much prettier town, about 22km away.
