Puerto Varas - Chile - 2005

In January-February 2005 we visited South America before and after our Antarctic Cruise.

49-days - Melbourne - Auckland - Buenos Aires (Argentina) - Ushuaia - 10-day Antarctic Cruise - Ushuaia - El Calafate -
Perito Moreno Glacier - El Calafate - El Chalten - Puerto Natales (Chile) - Torres del Paine NP - Chilean Fiords ferry - Puerto Varas -
Lakes crossing - Bariloche (Argentina) - Buenos Aires - Auckland - Melbourne

After the 4-night Chilean fiords cruise from Puerto Natales to Puerto Montt we collected our hire car and drove the 22km to Puerto Varas.
I had read on the Lonely Planet Internet site that Puerto Varas was a much more pleasant place to stay than Puerto Montt.

Puerto Varas is famous for its German traditions, its natural environment, and its popularity as a tourist destination.
It enjoys a scenic location close to mountains, lakes, forests and national parks.
It is located on the shore of Llanquihue Lake, the second largest lake in Chile.
The conical Osorno Volcano and the snowcapped peaks of Mt. Calbuco and Mt. Tronador are clearly visible from the lakefront.

This area was originally settled by German and Swiss immigrants and the Germanic architecture has been brilliantly restored.

Frutillar
, on the shores of Lago Llanquihue, hosts a renowned music festival which draws jazz and classical musicians from throughout the country and elsewhere.
