United Arab Emirates (UAE)

Six Emirates at the northeast end of the Arabian Peninsula on the Persian Gulf united in 1971 to form a new new country,
 The United Arab Emirates (UAE).
They were Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain.
Ras Al Khaimah joined in 1972.
Prior to this they were separate states but had close bonds and treaties with Britain.
Abu Dhabi is the capital of UAE , but Dubai is the largest city and the financial and cultural hub of the region.

With the introduction of long-range jets, particularly the Airbus A380, it has become very popular to fly direct from the east coast of Australia to Dubai and then on to Europe, instead of flying via Singapore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Hong Kong.
